An AR zombie apocalypse from the Walking Dead franchise

The Walking Dead: Our World is a game you play using Augmented Reality, which is a phone function that was popularized by the game Pokemon Go. Instead of capturing Pokemon monsters, you take shots at computer-generated zombies that you see walking the streets.

A role-playing AR shooter

The RPG side of the game is very similar to the other Walking dead games where you pick a character, you find new gear, buy new gear, and improve your character statistics. The same is true of this game, but you have to walk around and seek out the enemies that you destroy. You may also gather collectibles as you walk around, and defeating enemies earns you prizes too. Each zombie enemy has a danger rating. For example, a zombie with a three skull rating is harder to kill and more dangerous than a zombie with a single skull rating.

A great game with only minor niggling issues

The Walking Dead: Our World doesn't have you collect Pokeballs to use, but it does ask that you use energy to play the game. The more enemies you kill, then the more energy you lose. Energy can be bought, or regenerated, which means you cannot play for extended periods of time unless you buy energy drinks so that you may continue killing zombies. Other niggling concerns are that you cannot trade weapons with strangers, and you cannot create your own character. The end result feels a little rushed, which is a shame because it would be a world beating game if it just had more features and a better energy-currency system.

PROS

  • A location-based game with randomly generated enemies
  • You can still play without going outside

CONS

  • Little incentive to continue after using all your energy drinks
  • The game lags because there are too many zombies
